Day 3: Team Update

Following are accounts of the day from the Forlorn Hope Expedition team members. See more photos on the Expedition Photos page.

A message from Bob Crowley. I lost my phone near Camp of Death. I am pretty sure Franklin Graves wanted it so we could communicate in the future. The karma at Camp of Death, when we took a team moment of silence, was stirring. I will post when I can which may not be until after the finish. Words cannot express the gratitude and humility we feel from all of your heartfelt messages, stories and support. Onward!

A message from Elke Reimer. Day three was about 26 miles with over 13,000’ elevation change & was pretty tough. We traveled through the Camp of Death, across Sawtooth Ridge, down into the North Fork of the American River, and crossed the waters (safely) before climbing 1 1/2 miles XC and 2400’ up the the Foresthill Divide side, finally ending 10 miles later at our camp for the night. It is simply unfathomable to imagine the Forlorn Hope making this journey after so much dispute at the Camp of Death, especially the climb up from the NFAR. Many thanks to Marcy Rosser Crowley for the incredible vegan chili tonight, and Keith for embedding with us & making that climb!

A message from Keith Sutter. Today was intense and gritty. The team did around 26 miles over the toughest terrain they expect to see. They literally ran into camp in the dark. So they have made the river crossing and up a steep bank to reach camp 3, with much to reflect on as to what this would have been like for the Forlorn Hope group as they rest and refuel for moving on again tomorrow.
