Following are accounts of Day 4 from Elke Reimer and the team. View more photos on the Expedition Photos page.
From Elke Reimer: Day Four of our expedition is done! We began our day in Iowa Hill, descending into the canyon again before crossing the North Fork in the fog. It was beautiful, but by far the coldest experience we have had the entire way. It’s hard to imagine the Forlorn Hope making that cold descent & crossing the river in layers of heavy clothing, completely starved. We warmed up as we climbed out of the canyon, finally meeting the sun. From there, made our way toward Hwy 49 where we will spend our final night. Tomorrow, it’s about 23 miles to Johnson’s Ranch. What an incredible experience this has been.

From the team: The coldest day so far on the trail, now with around 23 miles left to their finish on Sunday. The team are overwhelmed by everyone’s support and comments – we kindly request that people don’t come to see them finish the journey at Johnson’s Ranch. With very limited access and to respect those who first walked this path, let us not have a large gathering but rather reflect on what the 1846 Forlorn Hope party achieved – and what our own athletes have been able to accomplish. There will be more photographs and full accounts to come from the team, once they have had time to collect their thoughts, with plans for various ways to fully illustrate and honor this journey.

Congratulations and more appreciation for your incredible journey. Please keep us informed of your plans to share your experience …would love to meet you when we’re allowed to gather.
